【英語】「along」の意味と使い方

どのような意味があるか？

「along」は、「～に沿って」「～に沿いながら」「ずっと」「一緒に」などを表します。品詞としては、前置詞と副詞の働きがあります。

【前置詞】…「～に沿って」「～に沿いながら」
　　　　　…「（方針など）に従って」
　　　　　…「～の途中で」
【副詞】……「前へ」「ずっと」「一緒に」など

用例

「along」は単独でも使えますが、他の語と組み合わせるとさまざまな意味になります。

「along ～」【～に沿って ／ ～に沿いながら】

・We walked along the river.
　（私たちは川沿いを歩きました。）
・There are many trees along the road.
　（その道沿いにはたくさんの木があります。）
・The dog was running along the fence.
　（その犬はフェンスに沿って走っていました。）

「along ～」【～に沿った形で ／ ～に従って】

・We need a plan along the lines of what we discussed yesterday.
（昨日話し合った内容に沿った計画が必要です。）
・I want a design along the lines of this example.
（この例のような方向性のデザインが欲しいです。）

「～に沿った形で・～に従って」という意味で使う場合は、主に「along the lines of ～」という形で使われます。ここでの「line」は「線」ではなく、「考え方・方針・方向性」などを表しています。完全に従っているのではなく、大体その方向に賛成しているという意味です。

「along ～」【～途中で】

・We stopped at a café along the way.
　（途中でカフェに立ち寄りました。）
・We made a few changes along the way.
　（進めていく途中でいくつか変更を加えました。）
・I learned many things along the way.
（途中で多くのことを学びました。）
　⇒ 経験の過程で学んだという意味。

「途中で」という意味で使う場合は、主に「along the way」という形で使われます。物理的な道も意味していますが、何かの過程の途中という意味でも使われます。

「come along」【一緒に来る ／ 現れる・やって来る ／ 進む・うまくいく】

・Can I come along with you?
　（あなたと一緒に行ってもいいですか？）
・You can come along if you want.
　（よかったら一緒に来てもいいですよ。）

・A good opportunity came along.
　（良い機会がやって来ました。）
・A bus came along just as we arrived at the stop.
　（私たちがバス停に着いたちょうどその時、バスが来ました。）

・The work is coming along nicely.
　（仕事は順調に進んでいます。）
・The house renovation is coming along slowly.
　（家の改装はゆっくり進んでいます。）

「bring along」【（人や物を）一緒に連れて来る・持って来る】

・You can bring your friends along.
　（友達を連れてきてもいいですよ。）
・Feel free to bring your kids along.
　（お子さんも遠慮なく連れてきてください。）
・Please bring along your passport.
　（スポートを持ってきてください。）
・She brought along her little sister.
　（彼女は妹を一緒に連れてきました。）

「go along」【一緒に行く ／ 続ける ／ うまくいく】

・Would you like to go along?
　（一緒に行きませんか。）
・I’ll go along with your plan.
　（あなたの計画に賛成します。）

・You’ll get used to the job as you go along.
　（仕事を続けていくうちに慣れるでしょう。）
・We learned more as we went along.
　（進めていくうちに、私たちはさらに多くを学びました。）

・The project is going along well.
　（プロジェクトは順調に進んでいます。）
・How is your new business going along?
　（新しいビジネスはどう進んでいますか？）

「go along with」【～に賛成する ／ ～に合わせる】

・She went along with the idea.
　（彼女はその考えに賛成しました。）
・She decided to go along with his suggestion.
　（彼女は彼の提案に従うことにしました。）

・I don’t agree, but I’ll go along with your idea.
　（賛成ではありませんが、あなたの考えに従います。）
・Don’t just go along with others; think for yourself.
　（ただ人に合わせるだけでなく、自分で考えなさい。）

「get along」【仲良くする ／ うまくやっていく ／ 生活していく】

・We get along very well.
　（私たちはとても仲が良いです。）
・The two children got along from the first day.
　（その2人の子どもは初日から仲良くなりました。）

・We’re getting along just fine.
　（私たちは問題なくやっています。）
・How are you getting along?
　（うまくやっていますか？）

・My grandparents get along on a small pension.
　（祖父母は少ない年金で生活しています。）
・She gets along with very little money.
　（彼女はわずかなお金でやりくりしています。）

「get along with」【～とうまくやる・～と仲良くする ／ ～にうまく対処する】

・The new student gets along with everyone in the class.
　（その新入生はクラスのみんなとうまくやっています。）
・My brother and I don’t always get along.
　（兄と私はいつも仲が良いわけではありません。）

・Can you get along with very little sleep?
　（少ない睡眠でもやっていけますか。）
・He gets along with a limited budget.
　（彼は限られた予算でうまくやりくりしています。）

「move along」【先へ進む ／ 立ち去る】

・Please move along.
　（先へ進んでください。）
・We moved along the road slowly.
　（私たちは道をゆっくり進みました。）
・Don’t stop here. Move along, please.
　（ここで立ち止まらないでください。先へ進んでください。）

「sing along」【一緒に歌う】

・Everyone sang along to the song.
　（みんなその歌を一緒に歌いました。）
・Come on, sing along!
　（さあ、一緒に歌おう！）
・My dad loves to sing along while driving.
　（父は運転しながら一緒に歌うのが大好きです。）

「play along」【話や冗談に合わせる・芝居に付き合う】

・She played along with the joke.
　（彼女はその冗談に付き合いました。）
・I decided to play along.
　（私は話を合わせることにしました。）
・Can you play along for a few minutes?
　（少しの間だけ話を合わせてもらえますか。）

「all along」【最初からずっと・実はずっと】

・I’ve believed in you all along.
　（私はずっとあなたを信じていました。）
・He had the answer all along.
　（彼は実は最初から答えを知っていました。）
・I knew it all along.
　（最初から分かっていたよ。）
